Dear Jen,

Welcome to the Meaningful Leadership newsletter series.
Completion and Creation

As we draw to the end of 2008, our global economy continues to contract, and terrorism and oppression continue to expand. In some circles, uncertainty, fear and panic are the valued currency.

The year has brought change to us all at individual and collective levels. For anyone leading powerfully in life or in business, taking time to reflect, integrate, and learn from the past year is a critical practice.

Distinct from finishing or ending, completing well allows us to clear the decks, learn necessary lessons and reflect in a way that sets us up to create powerfully going forward. During this busy season we encourage you to take some time with these questions in the service of completing the year with dignity and purpose.

Set the stage for creating 2009 with grace, power, clarity, and ambition.
  • What do you need to say to be complete with this year?
  • Who do you need make amends with or thank?
  • What is there to say about your money, investments and debts?
  • What disappointments, distractions, desires and dreams from this past year require attention or acknowledgement?
Completion ends when you have nothing more to say about the person or subject with whom you are completing, when the answer to the question, "Am I complete?" is "Yes." This exercise can be done in dialogue, in a journal or as a meditation.

Then, we invite you to powerfully create your future. 2009 promises to be a year of great change: there is hope that with new leadership in the United States will come balance, order and peace. Creating 2009 for yourself, your department or your organization will help you face the uncertainty of the future while remaining present to this moment.

You can use several methods for crafting 2009.  Two of our favorites include:

  1. Setting clear and specific intentions
  2. Writing accomplishments. For more detail and instructions on this process click here.

In Gina's family they have a tradition they call the three questions. Over the holidays they ask each member of the family the following:

  1. What are the highlights of the past year?
  2. What are the lessons learned in 2008?
  3. What are your hopes and dreams for the coming year?
In this moment, take the opportunity to see where you started 2008, acknowledge where you are, and intend a future of your design.

Beannacht
("Blessing")
On the day when
the weight deadens
on your shoulders
and you stumble,
may the clay dance
to balance you.
And when your eyes
freeze behind
the grey window
and the ghost of loss
gets in to you,
may a flock of colours,
indigo, red, green,
and azure blue
come to awaken in you
a meadow of delight.
When the canvas frays
in the currach of thought
and a stain of ocean
blackens beneath you,
may there come across the waters
a path of yellow moonlight
to bring you safely home.
May the nourishment of the earth be yours,
may the clarity of light be yours,
may the fluency of the ocean be yours,
may the protection of the ancestors be yours.
And so may a slow
wind work these words
of love around you,
an invisible cloak
to mind your life.

~ John O'Donohue ~

We wish you Peace, Happiness & Love this holiday season.

Yours in sufficiency,

Gina LaRoche and Jen Cohen
