Engaging the Enemy Within

• Are you your own harshest critic?

• Do you find you are confronted by the same obstacle over and over again?

• Do you have an inner voice that does not allow you to enjoy triumphs, happiness, or peace?

We all know the saying, “We are our own worst enemy.” If unchecked this enemy can keep our true self – potential, joy, and freedom – held hostage.

This enemy can have many faces, Engaging the Enemy is a technique based on the work of Feeding Your Demons by Tsultrim Allione that allows you to name your enemy, be aware of and meet your enemy head on, instead of battling or suppressing it. In this way, you replace struggle with freedom, coping with acceptance, fear with courage. With the guidance of a Seven Stones coach, you pass through the enemy-tunnel and on the other side you will discover the capability to offer your enemy love and compassion. A transformation occurs, and you, and anyone entangled in the enemy’s web, are released. A newfound freedom and peace settle into the empty space.

This process will engage our three major enemies:

1. The Outer Enemy can be drugs, alcohol, diseases, or trauma related to violence, abuse, neglect or experiencing racism, sexism or homophobia. Natural events such as tornados, hurricanes or tsunamis can also stir our inner enemy.

2. The Inner Enemy we are confronted with most often on our personal development journey arising on the inside with little outward cause. Based in thoughts, emotions, fantasies, the past and the future, they appear as anxiety, self-loathing, worry, depression, jealousy and insecurity among others.

3. The Enemy within Relationships is the root of all enemies of our own self-importance. In this way, our egos cling to projections of our needs and desires onto others, such that we cannot see who they are clearly. This clinging is often at the heart of selfishness, arrogance and self-absorption.

We all have enemies craving our attention. When we choose to give them our attention, magic occurs and we are freed. We can now move forward towards our dreams with a lighter step and open heart.

“I have engaged my enemies twice now, once with Shame and once with Self-loathing. It was, I like to say, like magic. I thought that I would forever have to deal with these strong waves of debilitating voices and sensations that slowed and bogged me down, time and time again. Allowing their needs and true voices to arise transformed them into Allies. Now I am a strong where I once was weak.” SO, Executive Coach
