17 Billion Earths

By Shea Adelson

On a sad or overwhelming day, when scarcity has a stronger or louder pull on us than the remembering of our being enough … and our desire for happiness feels inaccessible, put this in your mind … there are, count them:

17 billion Earth-sized planets in our galaxy, the Milky Way, alone.

When the scientist interviewed on NPR shared this newly published data byte, he himself said, “Isn’t that crazy?” revealing the awe of the scientist.

May I be so awed. May we all be.

Rather than feeling small and insignificant, may we rest in the truth of the vast and immense expansion and possibility of the universe, the magical, mysterious great source of our enoughness. May awe be a point of access to joy and ease and resolve the paradox of our significance.
